WHAT DO WE DO AT SUPERIOR STONE TILE?
Superior Stone Tile is a Traverse City based family company, specializing in designing and creating handcrafted tile for your home. Our stones come from all over, but we are known for our stones collected from Lake Superior. Superior Stones are vibrant and are unlike any other variety nature has to offer. Each stone is hand picked, transported, cut and either sold ‘loose’ or as a pre-matted product for easy installation. Though there are many copies out there, we have developed a product that surpasses any imitators. Much of what we gather can range from a wide assortment of granite varieties, iron rich shale, all sorts of conglomerates (yes some "Pudding Stone"), agates, banded iron stone and so much more.

To accompany and accent our Superior Stone Tile, we  offer the option of adding cut Petoskeys to your order.  Petoskey, is Michigan's State Stone and is highly sought after.  Petoskeys are a great point of pride to Michiganders, not only because of their beauty, but also their rarity; being exclusively found in Northern Michigan.  Their increasing popularity is creating a high demand for them, as well as making them harder to acquire. Though Superior Stone Tile's stones are cut for tile setting purposes,  feel free to contact, Operations Manager~ Erika, for the sale of whole uncut, unpolished Petoskey stones.  Besides for flooring or tiling purposes, there has been an increasing need for raw Petoskeys, with an ever growing list of creative applications.

Our newest stone tile line, is a beautiful collection from Arizona, called Mohave Stone Tile. These stones have the rustic hues and vibrant colors associated with the Southwest. Many of our pieces can even contain bands of turquoise and some with flecks of gold. Because they are not water worn, they maintain their rough edges, which has a different texture and grain when compared to the Superior Stone Tile line.

Many of our stones are measured and matted for easy installation, but stones sold as ‘loose’ are weighed and sold by the square foot. Though it may take more time to install, the end result is seamless, when the product is used to cover a large area.

If you have any questions regarding products or installation, we are always happy to help.  If your project is local and you need help with labor, we have recommendations for experienced tile-setters, that are well practiced with this product.

Please also check out our "F.A.Q." page to answer very commonly asked questions that we have answered for you in advance.

Our stones can be installed anywhere that ceramic tiles can be used and work great as accents, borders, backsplashes, counter tops, tub decks, showers, around the fireplace; the options are limitless.

matted stones

This product option is available in the Superior Stone Tile line and Mohave Stone Tile line. Matted stones are pre-measured and mounted onto a mesh backing. This makes this product ideal for working with a defined, linear space for easy installation.

This mesh mounting is ideal for adding accents such as back splashes accents, borders or anywhere you choose. Matted stones are available in sizes: 12×12, 6×12 and 4×12 sizes, in both the Superior Stone Tile line and some Mohave Stone Tile lines as well; see the ‘Product Chart’ on our "Product" page, for availability.  Please also look at our 'loose' option before making any decisions.

loose stones

Stones sold as loose are stones that are simply cut, processed, and not mesh mounted. Each stone is sliced to measure at the standard 3/8 inch size, and can be used in the same places as ceramic tiles. They are weighed and are priced by a 4 LBS increment; which is equivalent to a very generous square foot. Technically, our 12 × 12 matted tiles weigh 3.75 LBS. By using a 4 LBS measurement, we give you more room to play with; allowing you many creative options when installing. These are pre-cut stones that are arranged by the tile-setter, much like mosaic tile pieces. The process of installing loose cut stones, is essentially the same concept as the application of mosaic ceramics tile.
It is important to keep in mind that matted pieces, laid side by side in large areas, will leave an obvious outline of each piece used. When covering larger areas with our tile, please use the loose stones for best results. Though loose stones may take more time to install, the end result is seamless and worth it, when the product is used to cover large areas.

Our Stones are hand-picked from the shores of Lake Superior. This lake is famous for many reasons, but it’s most unique qualities are the vast varieties of stones washed ashore and the diverse geological properties & processes that have allowed Lake Superior to have the best collections. Each stone is carried back to Traverse City, where we craft the best stones, into high-end stone tile.

If you are familiar with Northern Michigan, you may be aware of our state stone which is only found in the area. Petoskey Stones are an ancient coral that has fossilized, and in the process, gained these beautiful contrasting patterns. When coupled with our stones from Lake Superior, the results are extraordinary. They are available by request in our matted Superior Stone Tile line, as well as loose by the square foot, however; they are not included in the regular mix of our 'loose' Superior Stone Tile line

Petoskey Stone Tile Line

Petoskey Stone Tile is available as loose non-_matted_ sliced stone tile or it can be included as part of a matted piece of Superior Stone Tile by request/upgrade. Petoskey Stones are native to the Northern Michigan area. They elegantly compliment the vibrant colors of Lake Superior’s stones, creating a one of a kind product.

What are Petoskey Stones?
During the Devonian period 350 million years ago, what is now Northern Michigan was covered in warm sea rich in life, and many baring no resemblance to today’s creatures. Petoskey Stones are the petrified remains of an ancient coral that was native to the area. The distinctive spots that give it contrast were actually where silt and remains over time, that fossilized into this hardened stone. What we now have is a beautiful fossil, with essentially crude oil, giving it very distinct and contrasting characteristics.
